Two wardens of the Salem Central Prison in Tamil Nadu were arrested on Thursday for allegedly raping a 20-year-old woman and videographing the crime.
According to police, the wardens were identified as Arun (30) and Sivashankar (31).
The survivor in her complaint lodged with Hasthampatti police on Wednesday said that the two men sexually assaulted her at the police quarters seven months ago and had been repeating the crime ever since. They have also recorded the crime on their cell phones and threatened to share it on social media if she revealed it to anyone.
Based on her complaint, both were picked up by police on Thursday and later they were identified as wardens of Salem central prison. During the inquiry, the police found out that about seven months back the victim was waiting in front of the jail for an auto rickshaw. Warden Arun had come that way and had a friendly talk with her and exchanged their cell phone numbers. A few days later, wardens Arun and Sivashankar engaged in security work for the prisoners were admitted to the Salem Government Hospital for treatment. The young woman has also come to the government hospital for treatment. This is where Sivashankar is said to have become acquainted with the young woman. The 2 wardens called the young woman from time to time and raped her by blackmailing her to release the video of her nudity.
Following their confession to the crime, police registered a case and arrested them under Sections 376 (2) (a) of IPC, Section 66A of The Information Technology Act, 2000, and under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
Subsequently, Salem Jail Superintendent Tamilselvan has suspended the two accused warders from service.
