Jaipur. In the 21st century, where life is being searched for on other planets and work is being done to fulfill the dreams of establishing human settlements, on the other hand, the rural areas of India are entangled in the web of superstitions.
The latest case has come to light from Khetri village in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. Where a tantrik put burning embers in his hands in the name of removing ghost from the woman’s body. Both the hands of the woman suffering from embers were scorched. After the accident, the victim told the police about the complaint, then the accused Tantrik instilled the fear of destroying the whole family with Tantra Vidya. A month after the incident, a case has been registered against the tantrik and his brother at the Khetri Nagar police station in this regard.
Monika Kumawat, a resident of Guda Godji village, reached the Khetri Nagar police station on February 14 with her husband Vinod Kumawat regarding the incident. Where she presented a written report and told that on January 17, she along with her husband had gone to the Balaji temple of Badau village under Khetri Nagar police station area to bow down. According to the police, Monika said in the report that the priests named Ramesh Saini and Rohitash Saini took me inside after asking my husband to stand outside. The accused took her to the hall of the temple and put burning coals in both the hands telling the victim to be a ghost. Hearing the crying and screaming of the woman, the husband standing outside came inside. The husband took the woman to the hospital in scorched condition. Where after treatment, the couple went to the priests to criticize this act, then the accused started threatening to kill the couple with Tantra Vidya. The accused said in a warning tone that it was the police station, it was the court, do whatever you want to do.
The Mooknayak asked Vinod Kumawat, the victim’s husband, why did he reach the police station after a month after not registering an FIR at the time of the incident? On this Vinod Kumawat says that at that time the tantriks first threatened him. Then lured us with money. When we did not agree to both the efforts of the tantrik, he created social pressure to remain silent by leading the elders of Badau village. The police did not take action on the matter of the elders of the society.
Vinod further said that now for the last few days the tantrik was calling and threatening my wife. When he persuaded the Tantrik not to threaten, he was again threatening to destroy the whole family with Tantra Vidya. That’s why now he has taken shelter of the police.
Why did you have to go to a tantrik? On asking, Vinod Kumawat says that his wife was ill for a long time. She used to complain of headache. He was having trouble forgetting things. He is also undergoing medical treatment for this. Vinod says that for the first time after marriage in the month of January, his in-laws had gone to Badau village with his wife. There the mother-in-law said that go with your wife and visit Badau Balaji. This incident happened when I went to worship Balaji with my wife.
Vinod says that everyone goes to visit the temple. Everyone has their own faith in God, but some such people are doing wrong under the guise of religion. Wrong has happened to us too. Now justice is expected from the police. He said that the police have not yet arrested the accused. If the local police does not give justice then they will go to the higher authorities also.
Speaking to The Mooknayak about the incident, Khetri Nagar police officer Ajay Singh said that the victim, Monika Kumawat, a resident of Guda Godji, had come to the police station on Tuesday, February 14, along with her husband Vinod Kumawat. The victim has given a written report of the incident that happened to her on January 17. A case has been registered and investigation has been started.
The police officer agreed that faith has its place in religion, but because of superstition here, the Tantrik physically assaulted the victim. The SHO said that the victim’s hands are still burnt. Medical of the woman has been done. The situation will be clear only after the report comes. The police had also gone to the accused Tantrik’s hideout to interrogate him, but both the brothers could not be found.
People could not forget this incident of August
Vikas Pareek Khatri, a local journalist of Jhunjhunu district, says that in Khetri Nagar area, the hands of women have been burnt with burning coals in superstition. It is painful. He said that people have still not forgotten the heart-wrenching incident that happened earlier in August 2022 in Dungarpur district of Rajasthan itself. Let us tell you that during the worship of Dasha Mata in Chitri police station area of Dungarpur district, during the worship of Dasha Mata, a 14-year-old girl had cut the neck of her own 7-year-old niece with a sword, due to which the 7-year-old girl died. Was. According to media reports, a 14-year-old girl had received a letter from her mother. Dasha Mata was worshiped for this. The sword was also kept during the puja. The incident was carried out by striking with this sword.
What is the law regarding spreading superstition?
Supreme Court advocate Mukesh Kumar said that there is no specific central law regarding superstition in India. In 2016, the Witch-hunting Prevention Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha, but it was not passed. However, there are different laws, through which work can be done to ban it.
If someone is murdered due to superstition, action is taken against the accused under section 302 (punishment for murder) of the IPC (Indian Penal Code). Similarly section 295. discourages such practices. Apart from this, there is a provision for action under the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, 1954 on those who claim to cure any disease in a miraculous or divine way. Through this also the work of stopping superstition is done.
Which states have made laws?
Right now Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Rajasthan, Assam, Maharashtra and Karnataka have laws to stop superstition. Bihar was the first state to enact a law to stop witchcraft, to label a woman as a witch, and to prevent torture, humiliation, and killing of women. It is named The Prevention of Witch (Witch) Practices Act and has been in force since October 1999.
In Maharashtra too, after a long agitation, a law was made on this. In 2013, the Maharashtra Prevention and Abolition of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman Acts Act was passed. Through this, inhuman practices and black magic etc. were banned in the state.
What do the figures say?
National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) figures show that more than one thousand people died in the last ten years due to witchcraft. Between 2012 and 2021, witchcraft was the cause of death of 1,098 people across the country. In 2021 alone, a total of 68 murders took place across the country in witchcraft cases. In October last year itself, Tantrik Mohammed Shafi had sacrificed two women in Kerala’s Kochi for practicing witchcraft. Many such cases have come to the fore.
What do experts say?
Psychologist Dr. Priya Saraswat says that faith has its place and superstition has its place. Faith in God makes you strong, but if someone claims supernatural powers in his name, stay away from him. Disease is treated by science. There is treatment for this. No one gets cured by blowing the broom.
