A 22-year-old Dalit student has alleged he was brutally thrashed by police at Greater Noida’s Beta-2 police station last year, adding the officials made him consume urine after arresting him in a “fake” extortion case.
On Monday, the complainant, Jeetu alias Jitendra Kumar, a law student from Aligarh, uploaded many videos on Twitter claiming he was picked up in a fake case.
In the video, in which UP DGP and Gautam Buddha Nagar Police commissioner has also been tagged, a group of people can be heard slapping and abusing a person. Gautam Buddha Nagar police said, “The said incident is about a year old. ADCP Greater Noida is investigating the veracity of video.”
Kumar claimed that on November 18, 2022, he was picked up by police after a woman filed a complaint that he was threatening her to pay him Rs 3.5 lakh as lump sum and Rs 30,000 per month.
The woman, who runs a spa, said in her complaint that Kumar had threatened to get her centre closed if she did not pay the amount. Following the complaint, police registered an FIR under IPC sections 384 (extortion), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal Intimidation) against Kumar and arrested him. He secured bail after a week.
“After being released from jail, I got my phone. They had deleted everything. However, I had a hidden camera in my phone, which recorded all incidents. I showed all these videos to Noida’s top police officials. They had assured me that the case against me would be closed, but it has been more than six months, and police have not taken any action. That’s why I was forced to upload this video on Twitter,” said Kumar.
He said he had submitted a written application to the Noida Police Commissioner office in April. “I did not threaten anyone for extortion. I am just a college student… Police caught me and they themselves put Rs 30,000 in my back pocket and took me to the police station and thrashed me. After knowing that I belong to Jatav caste, they abused me and crossed all limits of humanity by making me drink urine,” said Kumar in his complaint.
A statement by Gautam Buddha Nagar Police commissionerate said: “After being released on bail, a complaint application was filed by Jitendra to higher officials, in which investigation is ongoing. Necessary action will be implemented…”
