Jharkhand. The hostel run by the state Scheduled Caste Welfare Department in Palamu district is suffering from lack of resources. The Dalit students living in this hostel built in 1954 have many problems, but there is no one to listen to them. The students informed the hostel official about this matter several times. In 2022, CM Hemant Soren also inspected the hostel. After which the CM had given orders to improve the system, but the students allege that no hearing has been held on this.
There is a hostel run by the Scheduled Caste Welfare Department at Redma Medininagar, Bypass Road, Palamu District, Jharkhand. It has accommodation for 300 students. After 70 years, the condition of this hostel has deteriorated due to lack of maintenance. At present the hostel is in a dilapidated condition. The Mooknayak spoke to Babban Kumar, a student living in this hostel. Babban said, “The floors of all the rooms in the hostel are broken. The roof is also breaking at many places. At many places, part of the roof is in a state of collapse. Due to this, the students remain very scared. Due to the dilapidated roof, they are at risk of falling down at any time.” A major accident can happen. Due to the poor condition of the rooms, all the students living in the hostel have to spend the night in the verandah.”

Babban says, “We have informed many ministers of the state including the Hostel Superintendent, District Welfare Officer, District Deputy Commissioner about the problems of the hostel. Along with this, fellow student Anurag Kumar Bharti has informed Jharkhand’s Agriculture Minister, Finance Minister, A letter has also been submitted to the Drinking Water Minister and the Welfare Minister explaining the problem. But no hearing has taken place. At present, Dalit students from Palamu, Garhwa and Latehar districts are staying in this hostel and studying in various educational institutions. There are 300 students in the hostel. Provision for accommodation has been made by the government. In view of the increasing number of students, letters have been written several times to make accommodation arrangements for additional 300 students.”

Students said that there is a need to construct new rooms in place of old hostel rooms. Toilets are in bad condition and sewerage gets choked every day. For this reason, there is a need for a new toilet as well as repair of the old toilet. There is a need to make arrangements for clean drinking water as well as water supply in the hostel. There should be a provision for a drain for the dirty water coming out of the hostel. Along with this, library, papers and magazines are also required in the hostel. A permanent sweeper and guard should be arranged for the security and cleaning of the hostel. Proper electricity arrangements should be made in the hostel. Earlier, a mess was being operated which has been closed for about 20 years, it is also necessary to start it. Along with this, arrangements for rice, pulses and wheat at BPL rates should be made in the hostel.
In this matter, The Mooknayak talked to Shashi Ranjan, Deputy Commissioner of Palamu district of Jharkhand. The Deputy Commissioner says that information about the matter has been received. Any deficiencies found will be rectified after inspecting the hostel.
