UP: Dalit children beaten for playing outside temple, BJP MLA pressurizes for compromise; Chandrashekhar Azad threatens to take to the streets

Posted on September 17, 2024 by Dalit Times

In UP, three Dalit children were held captive and beaten by the village bullies for playing outside a temple and their family was abused with casteist slurs. The administration is pressuring the victim’s family for a compromise. Meanwhile, Dalit leader Chandrashekhar Azad has warned that if action is not taken soon, his workers will take to the streets and protest.

UP News: A painful and shameful incident came to light on 26 August 2024 in Daudapur village under Thana Bewar area of Mainpuri district, which exposed the bitter truth of casteist mentality and social discrimination prevalent in the so-called ‘Ramrajya’ of Uttar Pradesh. This incident happened with three Dalit children, whose only crime was that they were playing outside the temple. The so-called ‘feudal lords’ of the village were so annoyed by these children playing around the temple that they considered it a violation of the sanctity of the temple. Hurt by this ‘impurity’, two influential persons of the village took the children hostage and beat them brutally.

The bullies abused the family on caste lines and threatened them

The incident did not end here. After the atrocities on the children, when other members of the family, including the elderly and women, protested against it, the bullies also abused them with casteist slurs and threatened them. Sunny Pratap Jatav, who is a member of the victim’s family, said that the scene that day was such that the whole family was terrified. The bullies of the village behaved inhumanly with the children and socially humiliated the family.

BJP MLA continues to put pressure on the family to reach a compromise

After the incident, the family filed a complaint with the police in the hope of getting justice. An FIR was registered on August 26, but even after several days of the incident, the accused feudal lords were not arrested. This case has become an example of casteist thinking and administrative negligence prevalent in Uttar Pradesh. The victim’s family says that ever since this incident happened, they are living in fear and terror. They are losing hope of justice not only from the accused but also from the local administration and the ruling party. The local BJP MLA and some people from the ruling party are constantly pressuring the family to reach a compromise, due to which the family is feeling even more insecure.

The victim’s family is in panic

Victim Sunny Pratap Jatav said that there is an atmosphere of tension in the entire village due to the lack of arrest. The family is hopeful of justice, but the slow action by the police is breaking their trust. The administration’s inaction and lack of strict action against the accused clearly shows that casteist forces are not only influential in the society but also have a hold on the law and justice system.

Chandrashekhar Azad protested against this casteist incident

Meanwhile, Chandrashekhar Azad has strongly protested against this casteist incident in Mainpuri district. He has condemned the non-arrest of the accused and the pressure being put on the victim’s family for a compromise. Chandrashekhar made it clear that if the accused are not arrested soon, the workers of Azad Samaj Party will take to the streets and protest. He says that the administration’s inaction in such incidents promotes casteist thinking, and if justice is not delivered soon, his organization will be forced to take strict steps.

Caste mentality is still prevalent today

The most tragic aspect of this entire incident is that a section of the society is being humiliated and harassed on the basis of caste, and the administrative system is remaining a mute spectator. The question arises that are we really living in a modern society, where every person gets equal rights and respect? Or is the casteist mentality still so deeply rooted in our society that getting justice for the weak and marginalized sections is just a dream?

Such incidents should not happen again

If no strict action is taken in this incident soon, it will be a cause of deep disappointment not only for the victim’s family but for the entire society. Delay in action in such cases only emboldens the accused and creates distrust in the justice system in the minds of the victims. In such a situation, it becomes necessary that the administration understands its responsibility and ensures justice without any political or social pressure, so that such incidents do not happen again in future and the roots of caste discrimination in the society are weakened.
