Baghpat: Jitendra Kumar, 26, from Baghpat, who tried to self-immolate near Parliament on Dec 25, is a Dalit and was desperately looking for justice for his family over a dispute with some members of the upper-caste in his village, his cousin told TOI on Thursday.
“Jitendra’s father was attacked in the past. His sister-in-law had suffered a miscarriage after she was kicked by the accused men who barged into the house with guns. He had visited police stations across the district, but to no avail… Jitendra’s sister’s marriage was planned in Feb, and we thought that he went to Delhi for that purpose,” Jitendra’s cousin Gaurav Kumar said in his hometown Patti Dhannaan under Chhaprauli limits.
Jitendra sustained almost 90% burns on Wednesday and is “battling for his life at a Delhi hospital”.
Raj Pal, Jitendra’s neighbour, said, “It all started when Kavinder Chaudhary, a home guard, and his brother Vikender Chaudhary started having issues with Jitendra’s father, Mahipal Kumar. Mahipal was assaulted and when he approached local police, Kavinder (posted in the same thana) didn’t allow an FIR to be lodged. In a later incident, one of them nearly killed Mahipal after hitting him with a car. But, luckily Mahipal survived.”
Echoing Gaurav and Raj Pal, another neighbour, Ishwar Das, further said, “Jitendra and his brother were even sent to jail in a fake case. After coming out of prison, he approached the SC/ST commission in Lucknow with the family’s issues, after which an FIR was registered, but police in Baghpat disposed of that case without a proper inquiry.”
Manish Kumar, a resident of the same neighbourhood, added, “Jitendra was stressed for the past three months. He left for Delhi after informing that he would immolate himself if no solution was found. Some influential people from the upper caste do not want us to live in peace…”
Jitendra has two cases of assault registered against him in Baghpat and he had filed a case against Vikendra under the SC/ST Act related to the car incident, police said.
SP (Baghpat) Arpit Vijayvargiya, meanwhile, said they are investigating the entire matter.
Baghpat MP Raj Kumar Sangwan told TOI: “I visited the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital and met the family and assured them that justice will be done. I’ll take up the matter with the CM and will try to get the case investigated by a different agency.”
