Police harassment on Dalits: Protest against police brutality on Dalit women and youth

CPI (ML) and Daily Wage Workers Union protested against the brutal police action on Dalit women and youth in Pandu and Patan police station areas. A large number of Dalit families participated in the march that started from Ambedkar Park. The protesters accused the police officers of atrocities and filing false cases and demanded strict action against the culprits. An appeal for justice was made by submitting a memorandum at the Collectorate.

The incidents of police harassment of Dalits in Pandu and Patan police station areas have created an atmosphere of anger in the district. CPI (ML) and Daily Wage Workers Union protested strongly against these incidents. A large number of Dalit families from Kajru Kala of Pandu and Saguna village of Patan participated in this protest march which started from Ambedkar Park on Monday. From Ambedkar Park, the march reached the main gate of the Collectorate via Chhahmuhan, Mahatma Gandhi Marg and Shaheed Chowk. The protesters raised slogans against the brutality and unjust attitude of the police.

Police brutality on Dalit women and youth

CPIML’s acting district secretary Ravindra Bhuiyan said that on November 28, in Saguna village of Patan police station area, a Dalit woman named Phoola Devi had a dispute with the owner of a Honda showroom over a transaction. In this case, the police took unilateral action and brutally beat up Phoola Devi and other women with sticks. Not only this, two Dalit youths were also sent to jail in a false case. Similarly, during a land dispute in Kajru Kala village of Pandu, the police attacked Dalit families in the presence of the CO. Their houses were demolished and they were implicated in false cases to scare them.

Struggle of Dalits against the administration

During the protest, AITUC leader Rajeev Kumar said that this brutal action of the police administration has exposed its real anti-people face. He demanded strict action against Patan police station in-charge, Pandu CO and other responsible officers. Panki Zilla Parishad members Khushboo Kumari and Divya Bhagat said that these incidents of atrocities on Dalits have proved that the police administration has completely failed in giving justice to the Dalit community.

Dalits’ resolve for justice

After the protest, the protesters handed over a memorandum to DC Shashi Ranjan. The memorandum demanded action against the guilty police officials and release of Dalits trapped in false cases. During the protest, CPI (ML) and daily wage workers union leaders Gautam Kumar, Ramraj Paswan, Triloki Nath, Pawan Vishwakarma, Pradeep Vishwakarma and others vowed to take this fight to its end.

Message of Dalit struggle

This protest was not only against the unjust attitude of the police but also a message to make the Dalit community aware of their rights and to unite in the fight for justice. This movement which started from Ambedkar Park is moving towards creating a new definition of equality and respect in the society.
