Lucknow: Five people were arrested in Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday. They are accused of motivating some members of the Dalit community to convert to Christianity by luring them with free treatment and other facilities.
According to the police, a prayer meeting was organised at the house of Rakesh Nat in Bankipur village of Barabanki on Sunday. Around 14 people, including some people from the Dalit community, were present in it. The police say that this prayer meeting was just a sham, the real purpose was to convert people to another religion.
The matter was reported to the police by Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad workers, after which the spot was raided and 14 people were detained and interrogated.
After interrogation, five accused were arrested under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Illegal Conversion Act. The names of those arrested are: Shivani Kumari, Gyananjay Kumar, Shyam Sundar, Radheshyam Gautam and Rekha Kumari.
According to a report published by Times Of India , the police say that these accused were luring economically weaker Dalit families to convert by offering free medical treatment, financial aid and other benefits. This activity was allegedly being carried out under the guise of a prayer meeting.
At present, the police is investigating the entire matter and trying to find out whether there is any organised network behind this alleged conversion.
