Two men beaten to death on suspicion of van theft in Rangpur

Two men were beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of stealing a van in Rangpur’s Taraganj upazila on Saturday night.
The incident around 9 PM in Burirhat Bottola area under Sayar union in the upazila.
The victims have been identified as Rupalal Das, 40, a resident of Ghonirampur village in Taraganj, and his relative Pradeep Das, 35, from Baluabhata village in Mithapukur upazila.
According to the victims’ families, police, and eyewitnesses, discussions were ongoing regarding the marriage of Rupalal’s daughter, Dupur Das, with Dipjol Das, son of Lalchand Das from Shyampur area in Mithapukur. The date of the wedding was to be fixed on Sunday.
As part of the preparations, Pradeep Das was heading to Rupalal’s house in Taraganj on his van from Mithapukur. Unfamiliar with the route through the village, he arrived at Kazirhat in Sayar union and called Rupalal for directions. Rupalal joined him there, and both started heading towards Ghonirampur on the van.
Around 9 PM, when they reached Bottola on the Taraganj-Kazirhat road, some locals stopped them on suspicion of van theft. A crowd quickly gathered at the spot. Suspicion intensified when locals found four small plastic bottles inside a sack on Pradeep’s van. Upon opening one, two individuals—van driver Alamgir Hossain from Pasharipara and Mehedi Hasan from Burirhat—claimed they felt unwell due to the odor of the liquid inside.
This further fueled the suspicion, and locals began physically assaulting the two men. After they lost consciousness, they were left at the playground of Burirhat High School.
Police later recovered them around 11 PM and took to Taraganj Upazila Health Complex where Rupalal Das was declared dead. Pradeep Das was referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries early Sunday morning, confirmed Rupalal’s brother Khokon Das.
Taraganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) M.A. Faruq said, “Two individuals died in a mob beating incident. Preparations for filing a case are underway.”
