A 65-year-old businessman was hacked to death by unidentified assailants on his way home in Narsingdi’s Raipura upazila last night.
Police this morning recovered the body of Manik Mia, a grocery shop owner of Uttar Bakhrnagar union, said Narsingdi Additional Superintendent of Police Sujan Chandra Sarker.
“The victim suffered sharp weapon injuries, especially to the neck. The motive behind the killing could not be known immediately. Legal procedures are underway,” the ASP said.
Quoting locals, the police said, Manik closed his shop at Uttar Bakhrnagar Bazar around midnight and started for home. Miscreants intercepted him near the bank of the Arial Kha river, hacked him indiscriminately, and fled after leaving his body there.
When he did not return home, family members began searching for him. Despite repeated phone calls, he did not respond.
“We called him many times, but he did not answer. Then, while searching, we found his body near the riverbank this morning” said his brother Suruj Mia, 50.
Police later sent the body to the morgue for autopsy.
