Key instigator’ in Dipu killing arrested

Detectives on Sunday night arrested a youth for his alleged involvement in the killing of garment worker Dipu Chandra Das in the Dubaliapara area of Bhaluka upazila in Mymensingh.
The arrestee, Md Bablu Mia, 24.
Md Abdullah Al Mamun, additional superintendent of police (administration) in Mymensingh, said primary investigation found that Bablu was present at the scene and played a key role in instigating the incident. He was the first to gather people at the factory gate and incited the crowd through slogans.
He later actively participated in the assault and killing of Dipu in front of the gate and helped move the body to Square Masterbari Main Road, the additional SP said.
Police said drives are ongoing to arrest other fugitives involved in the incident.
Dipu, 27, was beaten to death and his body was set on fire by a mob in Bhaluka on the night of December 18 over allegations of “hurting religious sentiments.”
The victim’s brother, Apu Chandra Das, filed a case with Bhaluka Police Station the following day, accusing 140–150 unnamed people.
Police said 23 suspects have been arrested so far. Three key witnesses have given statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, and 11 accused have made confessional statements in court.
