Gurugram: Man thrashed for marrying a Dalit woman, dies

The victim, identified as Akash, was a native of Alwar in Rajasthan and had been staying in Bhondsi with his 26-year-old wife. Rahul Singh, Akash’s elder brother, said that on November 9, the couple went to meet the woman’s parents for the first time after their wedding in an attempt to normalise the situation.

“My brother was attacked by Pawan, Mohit, Ravi, Ajay, Lalu and Dharmender with sticks, pipes and iron rods. When I learnt about the incident, I went to save him, but they pulled out guns and threatened to kill me. I returned to the spot after some time with a few friends but by then, they had left. Akash was critically injured and we took him to the Sector 10 Civil Hospital,” Singh alleged.

Police said they received a call from the hospital about a critically injured man. Akash, who was from a different caste, was then referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, where doctors had declared him unfit for statement. On Tuesday, Singh filed a complaint with Badshapur police, after which an FIR was registered under IPC sections 223, 228, 506 and Arms Act. After Akash died on Wednesday, Section 302 (murder) of IPC was added to the FIR.

On Thursday, police arrested Ajay alias Prami Jatav, Ravi Singh Jatav, Pawan Jatav, Dharmender Jatav and Mohit Jatav, all residents of Ravidas mohalla in Badshapur. ACP (crime) Preet Pal Sangwan said that interrogation revealed that Ajay was walking towards his home when he was hit by an auto rickshaw in which Akash was seated. “This led to an argument and a subsequent fight. Ajay called his friends and thrashed Akash and fled. The accused were produced before court on Thursday and have been remanded in police custody,” the ACP said.
