Dalit family forced to vacate house in Tirupur

CHENNAI: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has asked the Tirupur district collector and the superintendent of police (SP) to file a detailed report on a dalit family being forced to vacate a house. The commission took suo motu cognizance of the issue based on news reports.
According to news reports, M Kumar of Urumandampalayam in Coimbatore had been residing with his wife and elderly mother at Guruvayurappan Nagar near Kunnathur on a piece of land bought by him seven years ago.
Over the years, several houses came up in the locality and a majority of them belonged to people from intermediate castes. According to Kumar’s complaint, the intermediate caste residents had been threatening him to move out of the locality for a long time. He faced a lot of discrimination due to this, he said.
Kumar also stated that an AIADMK functionary and his supporters threatened and attacked him and his 65-year-old mother on November 8 and the political functionary threatened to foist a false case of sexual abuse against him.
The same day, the AIADMK functionary and his supporters loaded Kumar’s household items and cattle on a goods vehicle and sent to his relative’s house. The news reports stated that despite Kumar submitting a petition and an online complaint on November 13, the Kunnathur police had failed to act.
