New Delhi (JNN). In Tripura, one of the seven states of the Northeast called Seven Sisters, there is an uproar over settling Bru refugees these days. The government is going to permanently settle them in Tripura. Local people have taken to the streets to protest against this. The movement is becoming increasingly fierce day by day. People have started burning vehicles. Police have to release tear gas shells. There are barely 30,000–32000 refugees from the Bru tribe. These people are native to India. Why are the locals opposed despite such a low number? Who is in favor and against them? Let’s understand through this report ..

Wants to settle in Doburi village of Tripura: The Bru tribes are originally tribals of Mizoram. After the violence in 1996, he took refuge in Doburi village of Kanchanpura block in Tripura. After living here for more than two decades and fighting for the rights, there is an agreement to settle them here. An agreement was signed in Delhi in the presence of Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga in January this year by representatives of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Bru Saraniyah. In January, it was announced to release a Rs 600 crore rehabilitation plan package. Earlier in 2018, in the presence of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, an agreement was also reached between Tripura Chief Minister Biplav Dev and Mizoram’s then Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla.

Riot between Bru Ryang and Majority Mizo: The Bru tribe are originally from Mizoram. Most of these families were settled in Mamit and Kolasib district. In 1996 there was a communal riot between Bru Ryang and the majority Mizo community. Thousands of people fled to camps in the neighboring state of Tripura in 1997 after violent clashes. In this dispute, the Bru National Liberation Front (BNLF) and the political organization Bru National Union (BNU) emerged. On the one hand, they were demanding a separate district. The Mizo Association and Mizo Students Association opposed the participation of people from the Bru community in the elections. He says Bru is not a native of Mizoram.

There is a possibility of deteriorating the balance of environment and population

The Civil Protection and Mizo Convention, opposing the Bru tribe being settled in Tripura, formed the Joint Action Committee (JSC). Its chairman, Dr. Jainekamathiyama Pachchua, told the local media that the local administration had earlier assured that only one and a half thousand Bru families would be settled here, but now plans are being made to settle six thousand families. This will upset the balance of environment and population. Here, the district administration says that 15 different places have been identified for the refugees.

Demand for caste proof now with plot, ration

Under the agreement, the government has promised a 40 by 30 feet plot, FD of 4 lakh, Rs 5000 every month for two years and Rs 5 lakh for building ration and house for two years. The refugee organization Mizoram Bru Displaced People’s Forum (MBDPF) has also recently raised the demand for permanent citizenship and scheduled caste certificates.

Only 51 returned to Mizoram: first an attempt was made to send them to Mizoram. Despite announcements of employment and housing, only 51 people returned in 2019.

Bru means human in Reang language

The Bru community is the largest minority tribal group in Mizoram. They are native to the mountainous region of Myanmar’s Shan province who immigrated from Myanmar a few centuries ago and settled in Mizoram. Their dialect is Reang, which is similar to the Kokborok language of Tibet-Myanmar. Bru means human in Reang. They are also called Reang.

– 75 Tribal groups like Chenchu, Bodo, Garba, Asura, Kotwal, Baiga, Bondo, Maram Naga, Saura are classified as particularly weak tribal groups, Reang being one of them.

– These tribes are spread across 18 states and Andaman, Nicobar Islands.

Apart from Tripura and Mizoram, members of this tribe also live in Assam and Manipur.

Mizo, a majority tribe of Mizoram, calls them outsiders. Due to this protest, there was protest.

– Originally dependent on farming and weaving. Women weave traditional clothes.
