A minor Dalit girl was allegedly gang-raped by her boyfriend and seven others in Jalandhar, Punjab.
Police have arrested three of the eight accused on the basis of a complaint by the girl’s family.
Police said that the minor girl hails from a financially weak Dalit family. According to the complaint, the girl was in a relationship with the prime accused, Sandeep, who had promised to marry her.
“It is still not known whether the victim’s family knew about their daughter’s relationship with the accused,” police said.
As per the complaint, Sandeep had called the victim on March 15 and asked her to meet him the next day at a bus stand at Mandi Dabwali in Haryana’s Sirsa district.
Sandeep had allegedly told the girl that they would go to Jalandhar where they would get married.
The girl trusted Sandeep and left her home around 6 am on March 16. She went to a place called Kilianwali in Punjab from where she was picked up by Sandeep. The duo went to Jalandhar on the same day.
Police said Sandeep took the girl to a room in Jalandhar where seven of his accomplices — Ranjeet, Lambu, Billa, Rahul, Sandeep alias Sainya, Santosh and one unidentified person — were already present.
They took turns to rape the girl, who was dropped outside her home around 10 am on March 20.
Police conducted raids to arrest five other accused in the case. The matter is under investigation.
