NEW DELHI — Police in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, have arrested a Muslim social media activist for appealing people to hoist flag of Palestine on their houses and vehicles to show solidarity with the people of Gaza who are facing a violent onslaught of Israel for the last ten days.
Yasir Akhtar who operates a Facebook page by the name of Saraimeer Express had, according to police, written a post on his page asking people to hoist flags on their houses and vehicles after the Friday congregational prayers.
The police booked Akhtar invoking 505 (2) (publishing or circulating any statement to cause fear or alarm to the public) under FIR 73/21.
Police issued a statement on Thursday saying that the case was filed at Saraimeer Police station on the instructions of the Superintendent of Police Azamgarh, Sudhir Kumar Singh.
According to Police Akhtar, is a resident of North Chudihar town, Azamgarh
