West Bengal: Tribal minor gang-raped near Santiniketan, cops detain 3

SURI: An Adivasi minor girl from a village near Santiniketan in Birbhum was forcibly picked up on her way back from a local village fair (Charak Mela) by three to four youths, who allegedly raped her by the banks of a nearby river, just seven kilometres away from Tagore’s Visva-Bharati.
Police have started a probe following a complaint from the victim’s family. Three persons have been detained for interrogation.
According to locals, the boy fled to the neighbourhood after he was beaten up by the ruffians and raised an alarm. Some villagers rescued the girl. They also informed the victim’s father.
Birbhum SP Nagendranath Tripathi said: “We have received a complaint from the family. The victim underwent a medical examination. We have started looking for the miscreants.” Senior police officials Sanjay Singh and B L Meena reached the place on Friday to expedite the investigation.
Birbhum Police started the inquiry based on the inputs of the boyfriend, who had seen the miscreants when they accosted the girl.
