Uttar Pradesh: Violence during Buddhist Katha program, three arrested including Dalit storyteller
In Hariharpur village of Mitauli area of Lakhimpur district, upper caste people allegedly disrupted the Buddhist Katha program, after which there was a bloody clash between the two sides, in which 20 people including women were injured, a case was registered on both the sides.
Lucknow. A five-day Dharma Gyan Deshna Buddhist Katha was organized in Hariharpur village of Mitauli in Lakhimpur Kheri district of UP. During this, there was a dispute over the alleged comment on Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The dispute turned into a bloody conflict. Twenty people, including a woman, were injured in the incident. In this case, a case was registered on the Tahrir of both the parties. Two persons, including a Dalit storyteller, from one side, while one person from the other side has been arrested by the police and sent to jail.

Vinod’s son Baijnath, a resident of Majra Odhara of Hariharpur village, had organized a Buddhist story. Vinod said that Dharma Gyan Deshna Buddhist Katha was being organized in the village from February 7 to February 11, for which permission was taken from the administration. The story was to end on 11 February. During this, the people of upper caste community came to the place of the story and started fighting, in which other people including the narrator were injured.
20 people were injured
The day on which the Buddhist story was concluded. That day a dispute had started between the two sides of the village regarding any religious comment in the story. As the dispute escalated, there was a fierce fight between the two sides. Around 20 people, including a woman, were injured in the incident. After getting the information, the police reached the spot and sent the injured to the CHC. After which some people have been admitted to the district hospital.

In this case, station in-charge Mitauli Alok Dhiman said, “The police have registered a case on behalf of both the parties. On the complaint of Ram Bharose, the police arrested a total of 6 people including Ram Pratap, Murari, Hansram, Swami Dayal, Ashwini Shukla and Sanjay Shukla.” A case has been registered under IPC sections 147, 148, 308, 323, 504, 506 and Scheduled Castes and Tribes Act – 3(1) (d) (d) and 3(2). Police arrested Hansram. Sent to jail.”
Station in-charge Alok further said, on the other hand, on Rampratap’s Tahrir, police have registered a case against Vinod Kumar, Pappu Daku and Suresh under sections 323, 504 and 506, in which Pappu has been arrested. Along with this, narrator Chandra Pratap Gautam has been sent to jail on the charge of controversial remarks.
PAC deployed in the village
After the bloody conflict during the Buddhist story in the village, an atmosphere of tension was created in the village. In view of this, a company of PAC along with heavy police force has been deployed in the village. In the case, Superintendent of Police Ganesh Prasad Saha said, “Some such words were said on the mike by the narrator, which are related to Gods and Goddesses. We are still working to find out. Strict action will be taken.”
