A 47-year-old man in Karnataka’s Bengaluru rural district was arrested on Thursday for allegedly killing his daughter in her sleep after an argument over her relationship with a man from another caste. The accused was arrested after he surrendered before the police.
The police identified the accused as Manjunath, a resident of Bidalur village in Devanahalli taluk, and said that he slit the throat of his daughter Kavana, 20, while she was asleep.
A police officer said that Manjunath, who worked at a chicken shop, belongs to the Scheduled Tribe Naik community, and Kavana was in a relationship with a boy from the Scheduled Caste Chalavadi community.
According to the police, Manjunath wanted Kavana, his eldest daughter, to marry a man named Mukund. However, she denied the proposal and said she was in love with another man. Manjunath then married his daughter Keerthana to Mukund. “On Wednesday evening, Keerthana returned home saying that Mukund was not taking care of her,” a police officer said.
When Manjunath refused to support her, Keerthana approached an NGO saying that she was being forced to go to her husband’s house and was subsequently rescued, the police said. The NGO workers reportedly asked Manjunath not to threaten his children and warned him of legal action if he did so.
After the NGO employees left, Manjunath allegedly picked up a fight with Kavana, blaming her for the family’s situation. “On Wednesday night, after the family members went to sleep, at around 3 am, Manjunath slit Kavana’s throat with a knife while she was asleep,” a police officer said.
Manjunath arrived at Vishwanathapura police station at around 6.30 am with the knife, surrendered before the police and confessed to his crime. He was charged with murder and will be produced before a magistrate on Friday.
