Dalit groom in Chhatarpur: In a village in Chhatarpur district of Madhya Pradesh, after 76 years of independence, a Dalit groom rode a mare, that too under the protection of the police. The groom had applied to the Superintendent of Police demanding police protection at the wedding.
Chhatarpur : For the first time after 76 years of independence, a Dalit rode a mare in Bundelkhand. The groom had sought protection from the Superintendent of Police in Tatam village of Chhatarpur district. He wrote an application that till date no Dalit from the village where he was living has roamed around the village riding a mare. After this, his ashes were taken out under proper police protection.
The whole matter is of Tatam village of Maharajpur police station area, where the marriage of Suraj Ahirwar, resident of Khajuraho, to Neelam Ahirwar, resident of Khajuraho was to take place on December 9, regarding which Suraj expressed doubt by giving an application in Maharajpur police station on December 4. I thought that some people living in the village might stop me from riding a mare, because till date no Dalit has ridden a mare in this village since independence.
Seeing the seriousness of the matter, the police provided police protection to Suraj on the night of 9 December and the ashes were taken out in the village under the supervision of the police. Suraj says that the Constitution has given fundamental rights to everyone in the country and we have full right to talk about our rights in independent India.
Giving information, Rohan Chaudhary, who lives in the village, said that he is a resident of Tatam village. In our village, since independence till today, no Dalit has ridden a mare. It was Suraj’s wedding. Suraj showed courage and sought help from the administration, after which Suraj mounted the mare and roamed around the village. There was good cooperation from the police administration, the tradition that has been going on since independence was finally broken after Suraj showed courage.
Youth leader Satish Singh, who works for Dalits, said that he had come to know that a Dalit youth had sought help from the police administration to ride a mare, that was the reason why we all attended this wedding along with me. I have many other friends too. The police administration had a very good contribution and no incident of any kind took place.
At the same time, Maharajpur police station incharge Vidu Vishwas said that a young man named Suraj from Tatam village had expressed doubt about riding a mare in the wedding ceremony and had demanded security. Police reached the spot and conducted the horse-riding ceremony, but there was no protest anywhere.
