Hyderabad: A Dalit woman has accused the police of harassing her at the Shadnagar police station near Hyderabad, following which a departmental inquiry has been initiated into the matter.
The woman, who was called to the police station in connection with the alleged theft of gold, claimed that she was assaulted in front of her minor son. According to her, her husband was first beaten up and then let off, following which she was subjected to abusive behaviour.
Speaking to reporters, the woman said she was forced to remove her saree and wear shorts. Her hands and legs were allegedly tied before she was assaulted despite her repeated pleas.
Responding to the allegations, Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty issued a statement confirming that the Detective Inspector (DI) of Shadnagar has been relieved of his duties and attached to the Commissionerate Headquarters pending the outcome of the investigation.
The investigation is being conducted by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Shadnagar, wherein further action will be decided based on the findings of the report.
Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) on Monday condemned the incident of harassment of a Dalit woman at a police station in a theft case. BRS Working President KT Rama Rao demanded that a case of SC and ST atrocities be registered against the policemen involved in it.
The former minister demanded strict action against those responsible and justice for the victim. Rama Rao said Telangana society will never forgive the “anti-Dalit, anti-women” Congress government.
BRS strongly reacted to the incident of stripping and torturing a Dalit woman at Shadnagar police station of Cyberabad Police Commissionerate. The woman was called to the police station on suspicion of being involved in theft.
The incident took place on July 24 but came to light on August 4. “Is this Indiramma’s rule? Is this democracy?” the BRS leader said of the woman being tortured to force a confession.
