Posted on by Dalit Times
In MP, when a Dalit groom was taken out in a wedding procession on a carriage, casteists broke the carriage, beat the horse with sticks and brutally beat up the carriage owner and his companions. The victims have filed a complaint with the police, and the case is under investigation. The incident highlights the deep-rooted problem of casteism and untouchability.
MP: Once again a disgusting picture of casteism and untouchability has come to the fore in Chaurai village of Damoh district. On Tuesday night, the casteists of the area not only attacked the carriage and horse but also brutally beat up the owner and his companions for sitting on the carriage in the wedding procession of a Dalit groom. This incident shows that even today caste discrimination and atrocities are alive in rural areas.
The wedding celebration turned into mourning
There was an atmosphere of joy in the house of the Dalit family of Chaurai village. The wedding procession was taken out with the groom sitting in a carriage. As soon as this procession passed through the main roads of the village, the dominant people there could not tolerate it. They considered the groom sitting in the carriage as against their so-called social superiority. However, the people involved in the wedding were happy in the procession, unconcerned about the threats of the casteists.
The carriage left even after the threat
Even before the incident, carriage owner Jaikishan Rajak and his brothers had been threatened that it was against their beliefs to allow a Dalit groom to ride the carriage. But when some people from the village assured him that they would be responsible for his security, the carriage owner showed courage and joined the wedding procession.
The wedding procession left, but was attacked while returning
There was no untoward incident during the wedding, but as the baraat was returning from the village, the miscreants ambushed them. They broke the wheels of the carriage, broke the glass of the DJ vehicle and injured the horse by beating it with sticks. During this, the carriage owner and his brothers Rahul Rajak, Krishna Rajak and Jagdish Ahirwar were beaten with sticks and punched.
The plea of the victims reached the police
After the incident, the victims somehow ran away and reached Jabalpur Naka police station. The police first advised them to get treatment in the hospital and instructed them to file a report in the morning. The victims have accused the people working at the Dhaba of Ratnesh Thakur of the village of beating them.
The injured and hurt victims
Jaikishan Rajak said that this incident has broken his family mentally and physically. The horse is seriously injured and repairing the carriage will cost a lot. He said that despite the threats from casteists, he went to the wedding procession only because he was confident that people would support him.
Deep roots of untouchability and casteism
This incident of Chaurai village proves that even today the right to equality in society is just a dream for Dalits. Even simple rights like riding a mare and taking out a wedding procession in a carriage become a cause of struggle for them. Casteist mentality and caste discrimination turned the celebration of a wedding into mourning.
Police statement and action
Jabalpur Naka Chowki in-charge Anand Ahirwar said that the case is under investigation. He assured that strict action will be taken against the culprits. However, the victim’s family and the carriage owner are still afraid that casteist people may target them again.
There is a need for change in rural society
This incident highlights the problem of not just one family but the entire society. There is a need to take strong steps to empower the people suffering from the scourge of casteism and untouchability and to bring equality in the society. This incident not only shows the failure of law and order but also exposes the deep wounds of the society.
