Tiruvarur: People of the Adiyan tribal community in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvarur district on Monday staged a protest demanding issuance of Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificates.
The protesters say that their protest will continue until they are included in the Scheduled Tribe community and a proper certificate is issued in this regard.
The protesters also refused to send their children to school. They said that until we get the Scheduled Caste certificate, we will not send our children to school.
People of the Adiyan tribal community currently live in various areas. These include Srivanchiyam, Nannilam, Thiruthuraipoondi and Muthupet. They have been demanding ST certificate from the Tamil Nadu government and the district administration for a long time. Despite filing petitions several times, no concrete action has been taken so far.
Fed up, the people of the community took to the streets today and appealed to the state government to issue ST certificates immediately. The protesters demanded immediate action from the district administration and the state government.
Let us tell you that apart from Tamil Nadu, people of the Adiya community also live in large numbers in Wayanad and Kannur districts of Kerala. These people were earlier bonded laborers of the landlords. When the state government implemented the Bonded Labor (Abolition) Act, many Adiya families were rehabilitated. They were rehabilitated under the Sugandhagiri project in Wayanad district of Kerala. However, bonded labor is still seen in some places.
