Bathinda: Police have been accused of bias in the police action against the Dalit Sarpanch and his associates in Chandbhan village of Faridkot district. This dispute was over the drainage of dirty water. After the fight, the police took action against the Dalit protesters. On the other hand, upper caste people have been accused of firing and there is a demand for legal action against them too.
Farmer leader Rajinder Singh Deep Singh Wala released a video on Thursday in which a man can be seen firing a bullet in a village street. The emergence of this video has given rise to allegations that the police have ignored the crimes of upper caste people while targeting Dalit protesters.
The dispute started on Wednesday when people from the Dalit community, led by sarpanch Amandeep Kaur and her husband Kuldeep Singh, sat on a dharna on Bathinda Road. They alleged that the upper caste people were not allowing a proper sewerage system to be built in front of their houses. As tension escalated, the police tried to disperse the crowd, leading to a clash between the protesters and the police. The protesters pelted stones, in response to which the police used water cannons. Several people, including three policemen, were injured in the clash.
On the complaint of injured sub-inspector Nachattar Singh, police registered a case against 90 protesters, of which 40 have been named, including the sarpanch’s husband, while 50 unidentified persons have also been booked. To control the situation, Faridkot SP Jasmeet Singh conducted a flag march in the village on Thursday.
However, Kirti Kisan Union leader Rajinder Singh alleged that the police favoured the upper caste people. He said immediate action was taken against the Dalit protesters while no case was registered against the upper caste people who opened fire.
On this matter, Faridkot SSP Pragya Jain said that a complaint has been received regarding the firing incident. She assured that, “The facts are being investigated and appropriate action will be taken.”
