A man has been sent to jail in a case filed over the rape and robbery of a woman in Cumilla’s Nangalkot upazila following a “previous dispute”.
The incident took place on Thursday night, and the victim lodged a written complaint with Nangalkot Police Station on the following day.
The police station’s Officer-in-Charge AK Fazlul Haque told The Daily Star, “Preliminary investigation confirmed the incident. Acting on the complaint, police conducted a raid Friday night and arrested the prime accused, Imam Hossain. He was sent to jail through the court on Saturday.”
Imam, 24, a resident of Nangalkot, and two others have been made accused in the case.
According to the complaint, the woman’s husband works as a driver for a private company in Dhaka. She lives in the village with her ailing 70-year-old mother-in-law and her 2-year-old daughter.
Imam has had an ongoing dispute with her husband’s family over property and had previously threatened to rape her on several occasions.
Around midnight on Thursday, Imam and two masked accomplices broke into her house with local weapons, chains, and locks. Imam gagged the homemaker using her child’s clothing and tied her hands and feet with iron chains. A masked man then raped her while another cut her hair, the complainants mentioned.
The attackers looted cash, gold ornaments, and important documents from a steel cupboard. Before leaving, they set fire to the family’s clothes.
Her elderly mother-in-law noticed the fire and called neighbours, prompting them to rush to the scene.
The homemaker mentioned hearing the name “Zahidullah” from Imam during the attack, suggesting the identity of another accomplice. She believes that the assault was linked to longstanding property disputes between the families of her husband and Imam.
Efforts are ongoing to arrest the other suspects, police said.
