Police beat up Dalits in public, now Jagan is shedding tears after reaching the homes of criminals!

Dalit organizations and TDP raised questions on YSR Congress President Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s Tenali visit, politics heated up over police brutality.

Published on: 04 Jun 2025, 2:53 pm

Tenali (Andhra Pradesh) — Local Dalit organisations and social activists on Tuesday protested against the visit of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to Tenali to meet the families of three youths who were publicly beaten up allegedly by the police on April 26.

The victims — Chebrolu John Victor (25), Sheikh Babulal alias Karimulla (21) from Tenali and Domma Rakesh (25) from Mangalagiri — all belonged to socially backward communities. A video of their beating went viral on social media on May 26, following which human rights organisations and the YSRCP strongly condemned the incident.

The case is related to an FIR lodged on April 25, in which Constable Kanna Chiranjeevi had accused the three youths of attacking him the previous night due to mutual enmity and for calling him for counselling in a drugs case.

Jagan, after meeting the victim families, told the media, “If these youths have committed any crime, they should have been arrested and presented in the court. The police have no right to take the law into their own hands.”

However, Jagan’s visit created a tense atmosphere in Tenali. Activists of several Dalit and social organisations staged a protest by forming a human chain at the market square.

A Dalit activist said, “When Dalit youth Nuthakki Kiran was murdered in this Tenali during the YSRCP government, Jagan did not even go to meet his family. Now he is standing in support of anti-social elements, this is unfortunate.”

TDP launched a scathing attack on Jagan’s visit. TDP MLA M.S. Raju said, “It is shameful for a former Chief Minister to visit the families of goons, drug-dealers and anti-social elements. He has not consoled the family of any freedom fighter or patriot till date.”

Raju alleged that Dalits were tortured during Jagan’s rule but he never intervened. “What was Jagan doing when YSRCP MLC Anantha Babu killed driver Subramanyam and sent his body to his house? Where was he when Dalit doctor Sudhakar was beaten up by the police during the Covid pandemic for merely demanding masks?” he asked.

TDP also released a list of cases registered against the three youths:

  • John Victor : 9 cases, including liquor smuggling, theft, kidnapping, fraud, assault and attempt to murder.
  • Doma Rakesh : Charged with molesting women, kidnapping, theft, assault and attempted murder.
  • Karimullah : Accused of attempted murder of police constable.

Reacting to this, Jagan alleged that the TDP government was misusing the police and registering fake cases against YSRCP leaders and workers. He said, “Now innocent youths are being harassed. The patience of the public is being tested.”

Former minister and TDP MLA Nakka Anand Babu also condemned Jagan’s visit, saying, “It is extremely shameful to support ganja peddlers and anti-social elements.”
