Hyderabad: Gaddam Santosh, a 19-year-old Dalit student of a social welfare residential junior college in Telangana’s Nizamabad district, committed suicide. The incident came to light on Saturday, July 19 morning when his body was found hanging from a tree in the college campus.
The incident took place when the student went to take a bath after his morning workout. According to the college administration, Santosh was last seen at 6:40 am. When he did not return for a long time, a search was launched for him and at around 7:40 am his body was found hanging from a tree in the college campus.
The administration immediately informed the police and the family. The body was sent to the government hospital in Amrur for post-mortem and then handed over to the family.
Gaddam Santosh belonged to a poor Dalit family. His father works in Dubai, while his two elder brothers work in Hyderabad.
“Santosh was good at academics. He had recently shifted from Telugu medium to English medium, so the change might have been stressful for him,” G. Punachander Rao, the regional coordinator of the college, was quoted as saying by the media.
However, the family suspects foul play. The deceased’s brother Srinu has filed a complaint at the Amrur police station, in which he has made serious allegations on the role of the college principal and physical trainer and has demanded an investigation into the matter.
The police have registered a case and started investigation in the matter.
