A member of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) was shot dead by unidentified miscreants in Khagrachhari’s Panchari upazila today.
The deceased was identified as Apan Tripura, alias Sangram, 28, of Padmini Para village in Ultachhari union, said Angya Marma, organiser of the Khagrachari unit of UPDF, in a statement to the media today.
The statement said that around 11:30am, a group of 15-20 armed men entered the Barakona area of Panchari Sadar union and started ambushing them. At that time, Apan fell in front of them on his way to organisational work and was shot dead.
Condemning the killing, the UPDF accused the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS), led by Santu Larma, of carrying out the murder.
However, Sajib Chakma, assistant information and publicity secretary of the PCJSS, denied the allegations. “The Jana Samhati Samiti has no involvement in such an incident. The allegation is baseless,” he said.
Md Ferdous Wahid, officer-in-charge of Panchari Police Station, told The Daily Star that on information, police recovered the body and sent it to Khagrachhari General Hospital morgue for autopsy.
