New Delhi | A year ago in the riots in North East Delhi, the rioters killed Babu Salmani of Shri Ram Colony as Jai Shri Ram. Bablu Salmani used to drive autos. He left for a ride on 25 February 2020 when the crowd at Khajuri Khas intersection caught him and started beating him.
Babu Salmani alias Babbu Khan, 34, who lives in Sri Ram Colony Khajuri Khas, Dayalpur, North East Delhi, is left behind by widowed wife Shahnaz and three children, including a girl and two boys.
Shehnaz, 26, the widow of the deceased, while taking her child in the lap, told that she was unconscious and dead when she was killed by the mob. There was a lot of breath left, and she was closed in GTB Hospital after two days.
Even after one year, the police has not submitted the post mortem report to the family of the deceased. The family has filed an FIR. The police informs the family verbally. At the police station, the police say that the documents are with the crime branch.
Talking to India Tomorrow, Babu’s elder brother Pappu Khan said that his younger brother was badly hit by riotous mob on the day of 25 February 2020. He was admitted to GTB Hospital but died on the morning of 27 February.
It may be known that there was a sit-in in Delhi and across the country in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which was under tremendous pressure on the government. Suddenly some BJP-backed leaders started making fiery statements to remove the protesters. Violence erupted in North East Delhi, killing 54 people from both sides.
The brother of the deceased told that the video of the incident had also gone viral, in which hundreds of mobs were beating my brother with sticks. It is clearly visible in the video that the police is also standing nearby but the crowd was attacking fearlessly.
A person from the neighborhood of the victim’s family said that the rioting crowd was chanting the slogan of Jai Shri Ram and asking the names of every visitor. When a Muslim was found, he would be killed badly.
Regarding the Delhi riots, the Fact Finding Report of the Delhi Minorities Commission stated that, “In some places the police remained completely mute spectators while the mob was committing acts of looting, burning of houses and violence.”
Talking about the incident, the deceased’s brother Pappu told that, “In this case, police station Khajuri Khas, I have filed an FIR against unknown people.” The police have said that 17 accused have been arrested in the case who are still in jail and a charge sheet has also been filed.
However, the family also says that who is arrested in the case and whether they are still in jail or not, they have no proof of this. He told that the police has said so. We have not been told the names of the accused.
On the question as to what the cause of death has been stated in the post-mortem report, the brother of the deceased said, “We were not given any paper. The post mortem report and other papers are with the police. An FIR was lodged in the police station Khajuri Khas. They had all the documents. Later the policemen told that the documents have been given to the Crime Branch. “
When the family was asked why there was no case, the brother of the deceased said, “We have not hired any lawyer because we cannot go round the court.”
The elder brother of the deceased is Pappu who drives an auto. Now the expenses of the house would run only from their earnings. Pappu says that I have children and my brother has three children and parents whose care is my responsibility. If you file a case, the court will always be circled, how will the family run?
The family previously lived in rented houses. The family has received compensation and now the entire family of the deceased is living in the number 16 street of Khajuri Khas.
The deceased’s 60-year-old mother Tehsin told India Tomorrow, “I have two sons and four daughters, all married.” Babu’s father is ill and stays at home. A son was killed in a riot, he has small children, whose future we are worried about. “
He said that now there is only one son, who has responsibility for his family as well as younger brother’s family and old parents.
A Fact Finding Report was issued by the Delhi Minorities Commission (DMC) in connection with the riots in February 2020 in which he was also accused of allegedly ‘inciting’ people through his speech questioning the role of BJP leaders.
According to the report released by the Delhi Minorities Commission, shops of Muslims were selectively targeted and the riots were well planned and organized.
11 mosques, five madrasas, a dargah and a graveyard were damaged in the Delhi riots. However, no non-Muslim shrine was damaged in Muslim-dominated areas.
54 people died in these riots. Several reports related to the riots had claimed that the Delhi Police did not inquire the people who were accused of inciting the riots.
