Dalit lynched over 6k theft, farm owner, cop booked

Hisar: A 50-year-old Dalit labourer named Hansraj was lynched on Wednesday night at Sisai Kalirawan village in Hansi area of this district over an alleged theft of Rs 6,000. A farm owner and a policeman were booked on the complaint of his wife, Lali Devi.
In a similar incident on December 16, villagers had lynched a 38-year-old Dalit man and injured two of his relatives over an alleged theft of an electric battery and other items. After the latest incident, the Hansi Sadar police booked farm owner Praveen and the unidentified cop under sections 365 (abduction), 302 (murder), and 34 (common intent in crime) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Lali Devi claims that on Wednesday, her husband had left for transplanting paddy in Praveen’s field and, in the afternoon, even come home for lunch. At noon, Praveen came to the house with three policemen of the Dial 112 team posted in the village and accused Hansraj of stealing Rs 6,000. She claims that they took the labourer with them and when he came back at 3pm, he looked scared. An hour later, Praveen and one of those policemen came back and took him away in a private car even as his brother-in-law Suman, sister Sonia, and aunt Ompati offered to pay Rs 6,000.
The complainant charged the accused with hurling caste slurs at her while taking away her husband. At 9am on Thursday, the village grocer raised an alarm on seeing Hansraj’s body in Praveen’s field. The family got there and found that his head had been smashed. Investigation officer Surjeet said the autopsy will be on Friday.
National Alliance for Dalit Human Rights convener Rajat Kalsan said the family will neither claim the body from the hospital nor do the cremation until the accused cops were identified and arrested. The villagers also talked to deputy superintendent of police Vinod Shankar at Hansi’s general hospital.
