Bareilly: A woman was allegedly gang-raped by a group of men from the upper caste and her husband was beaten to death when he objected to it in Bareilly of Uttar Pradesh. The incident happened in Piprathara village under Faridpur police station jurisdiction.
As per the police complaint by the woman, a group of people from the upper caste families in the village reached her house and demanded sweets for childbirth in the family. She asked them to come later as there was no one at home as her husband and mother-in-law were away for work in the agricultural fields. However, the accused were furious on being denied the sweets and started assaulting the woman. The woman alleged that she was gang-raped by the accused at her home.
The woman narrated the whole incident when her husband, Sachin, and mother-in-law reached home in the evening. On hearing her wife’s ordeal, Sachin confronted the accused and threatened to lodge police complaint. Sachin was then taken to a nearby forest and brutally beaten up by the accused. He was tied to a tree and assaulted with sticks and iron rods. He was declared brought dead when taken to a local hospital.
Police refused to lodge case
According to the deceased’s wife, the police initially refused to even lodge a complaint. Police allegedly took their thumb impression on a plain paper and told them to go home. Angry over the police inaction, the family kept the dead body at their home for two days and refused to perform the last rites of Sachin.
As the matter started to escalate, the police swung into action and lodged an FIR. As per the latest reports, they have nabbed three out of four accused mentioned in the police complaint by the family. The family claimed the atrocities by the people from upper castes in the village is routine. Most of the Dalit families have already left the village to continuous harassment.
