Casteism incident in Pali, Rajasthan
At a mass feast organized at a temple in Rajasthan’s Pali district, some people refused to eat food with Dalits. In this case, the victim has alleged that some people from the alleged upper caste refused to accept the Prasad from him and asked him to sit separately. The victim also alleged that they said that they belonged to a ‘lower caste’ and hence could not sit with them. The incident took place at Mamaji temple in Dhamal village under Marwar Junction police station in Pali district where a community feast was organized on August 29.
According to the FIR lodged at the police station, complainant Sujaram Meghwal (55) has alleged in his complaint that on August 19, a meeting of the village people was called by the temple committee, in which they met to discuss the preparation of community feast and prasad. All community members were invited.
The complainant claimed that during the meeting, some allegedly upper caste people asked people from the Dalit community to sit separately during the banquet. After which they boycotted the meeting. He further claimed that on August 25, committee members contacted him and assured that people from the Dalit community would not be discriminated against. After this, assurance was given that collective feast and prasad would be given to all the people. After which he gave his consent for the program.
Meghwal further alleged that when community feast and prasad were organized on August 29, Dalit families also reached the temple. When they reached there, they found out that there were two seating arrangements, one allegedly for upper caste people and the other for people from the Dalit community. When the Dalit community protested against this arrangement, upper caste people reportedly warned them not to sit with others while eating.
According to the complainant in this case, when members of the Dalit community objected to this discriminatory behaviour, the accused started using derogatory caste-based abuses. The complainant further alleged that the accused told us that you people belong to ‘lower caste’ and you are not entitled to sit with them and we will not feed you. After this incident, the Dalit community has lodged a written complaint at Marwar Junction police station demanding strict action against the accused. Based on the complaint, police have booked five people under sections 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and relevant sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
