Tamil Nadu: Student given urine in drink at National Law University, inquiry committee formed
The institute has constituted an anti-ragging committee comprising three assistant professors to investigate the matter. The committee will submit its report on January 18.

Tamil Nadu. The Tamil Nadu National Law University in Tiruchi district has initiated an investigation into the complaint of a 22-year-old Dalit student who was allegedly forced to drink urine by his classmates. The student has complained to the faculty in this matter. Following the student’s complaint, the college administration has constituted a committee to investigate.

According to the report, the incident allegedly took place on January 6, 2024, during a gathering of final year undergraduate law students within the college campus located on the Tiruchi – Dindigul National Highway. A final year Dalit student was allegedly tricked into drinking cold drinks mixed with urine by two of his classmates, one from the Dalit community and the other from the intermediate caste.
According to the report, it has been learned that the next day when the student came to know that he was cheated, he complained to the faculty. In this case this S.M. Registrar of the university, Balakrishnan said, “Acting on the complaint, the institute has constituted an anti-ragging committee with three assistant professors to investigate further. The committee will submit its report on January 18. After which the institute will take further action based on the findings of the committee. If they are found guilty, the university will initiate disciplinary action against them and a complaint letter will be lodged with the police.”
Many cases have come to light before
Last September 2023, a case of urinating on a Dalit youth was reported in NTR district of Andhra Pradesh. The young man was forcibly taken away in a car by six people. Then he assaulted her in the moving vehicle. When the youth asked for water to drink, the accused urinated on him. One of the accused was a friend of the victim. Everyone had kept the Dalit youth hostage for four hours. Along with this, the ropes had also broken his jaw. In this case, the police had registered a case and arrested all the accused.
On October 30, 2023, in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, six people first asked the caste of two Dalit youths, then beat them, injured them and urinated on them. After the assault, the accused kept the injured youth hostage till night. Then they looted both of them and ran away. On 23 September 2023, a Mahadalit woman was taken to her home by a Manbadh of her village in Patna, Bihar. Then he along with his son beat him up. After this, Manbadh also made his son urinate on the woman’s face. The woman suffered serious head injuries after the assault.
On July 2023, in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh, a BJP worker, under the influence of alcohol, had urinated on a mentally disturbed tribal youth. Its video went viral on social media. Police claimed that this video is one year old. Chief Minister Shivraj had washed the feet of the tribal victim of urination scandal and apologized.
On June 30, 2023, a Dalit in Jamvaramgarh area of Rajasthan alleged that the policemen kidnapped him. Then took him to the house of Congress MLA Gopal Meena. There Deputy SP Shivkumar Bhardwaj urinated on him. After this, MLA Gopal Meena got his shoes licked.
What do the figures say?
Recently the annual report of the National Crime Records Bureau was presented. According to this report, 57,582 cases of crime against Dalits and 10,064 cases against tribals were registered across the country in the year 2022. This is 13.1 percent and 14.3 percent more respectively compared to the year 2021.
In Uttar Pradesh alone, 15,368 cases of crimes against Dalits were registered. Earlier, in response to a question by BSP MP Girish Chandra, Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra had told in Parliament in March 2023 that 1,89,945 cases of crime against Dalits have been registered between the year 2018-2022. Of these, 49,613 cases were registered only in Uttar Pradesh.
