Uttar Pradesh: A 48-year-old Dalit man, Ramesh Chand, allegedly committed suicide on Sunday night after he was allegedly kicked, punched and humiliated by policemen during a local Ramlila event at Salempur Vivi village under Soron police station in Kasganj district. The incident has sparked public outrage, with family members and members of the Dalit community staging a protest on Monday demanding action against those involved.
In view of the increasing tension, a large number of police forces have been deployed in the area. According to officials, Ramesh’s body has been sent for post-mortem and senior officials have started investigating the incident.
According to the complaint filed by Ramesh’s wife Ram Rati, her husband had attended a Ramlila in the neighbourhood around 9 pm on Sunday. When he sat on an empty chair, the organisers allegedly objected because of his caste and called constables Bahadur and Vikram Chaudhary. Ram Rati claims that the policemen brutally hit Ramesh using caste-based slurs and then beat him up after he fell to the ground.
In her complaint, Ram Rati said that her husband asked those present at the event why this was being done to him but got no reply. After returning home, he narrated his ordeal before going back to his room. The next morning, Ram Rati found out that her husband had committed suicide.
Farmer Ramesh Chand has a wife and two daughters and four minor children.
According to media reports , Additional SP Rajesh Bharti said on the matter, “The man climbed the stage in an inebriated state and sat there, which the organisers and the audience objected to. With the help of the police on duty, he was brought down from the stage and brought back home safely. He was found hanging in his house at 6 am on Monday. The matter is being investigated.”
