Bhopal. The case of mysterious disappearance of a tribal youth in police custody in Gwalior’s Bhanwarpura police station area is getting heated. Chhotu Adivasi, a resident of Rampura village, was detained by the police four days ago on suspicion of vehicle theft, but his arrest was not recorded anywhere. Now the youth has disappeared from the police station under suspicious circumstances and the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the police station is also missing.
The family alleges that Chhotu was brought to the police station four days ago but he was neither produced in the court nor was he formally arrested in any case. He was illegally kept in the police station. During this time, the youth was also beaten up by the police. The family suspects that something untoward has happened to the youth.
The only constable was on duty
According to the police, Chhotu Adivasi disappeared from the police station at around 2 am on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. Havildar Ram Avatar Solanki was on duty at that time and he fell asleep. When he woke up, the young man was missing.
As soon as the news of Chhotu’s disappearance reached his family, they gheraoed the police station and accused the police of making the youth disappear. The family’s question is – “If Chhotu was involved in theft, why was he kept in the police station for four days? Why was he not sent to jail?” They say that the youth has been beaten up and now he has been made to disappear.
CCTV footage missing, argument of no electricity
Questions on the role of the police in this case have deepened because the footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the police station is missing. SDOP Shekhar Dubey gave a statement that there was no electricity at that time, so the cameras were off.
In such a situation, the question arises that if a person goes missing in police custody and there is no recording of the incident, then who will be held accountable?
Searched the whole day in the jungles but there is no trace of the youth
After the incident, the police and Chhotu’s family kept searching for him in the dense forests throughout the day. Most of the area of Bhanwarpura police station area is surrounded by hills and forests, where even mobile network is difficult to find. Till now no trace of the youth has been found. Police station in-charge Deepak Bhadoria has asked for two days’ time from the family and has assured that Chhotu will be found soon.
