A rice trader was hacked to death by unknown miscreants at his own shop before cash was looted in Mymensingh’s Trishal upazila on Monday night.
The victim was identified as Susen Chandra Sarker, 62, son of late Rajbihari Sarker of Southkanda village in Trishal.
Police said the incident occurred at Susen’s shop, “Messrs Bhai Bhai Enterprise,” located at Bogar Bazar Chowrasta in Trishal.
Quoting the victim’s family members and locals, Md Abdullah Al Mamun, additional superintendent of police (Administration and Finance) in Mymensingh, said miscreants hit Susen with sharp weapons on the head and face, and fled the scene around 11:00pm.
Later, family members found him lying in a pool of blood and rushed him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The body was sent to the MMCH morgue for autopsy, said the additional SP.
Police have started an investigation into the killing.
The victim’s son, Sujan Sarker, said, “We had no enmity with anyone. After brutally killing my father, the miscreants looted several lakh taka from the shop. We demand exemplary punishment of the killers.”
According to police, no case has been filed yet, and no one has been arrested as of filing this report around 5:00pm.
Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, in a statement, has strongly condemned and protested the incident.
The council demanded that the government immediately arrest those responsible and ensure exemplary punishment.
It noted that, at a time when communal violence is continuing ahead of the national election, such a murder has deepened insecurity among minority communities.
The statement further said that since no assurance has yet been provided by the government, the Election Commission, law enforcement agencies, or political parties to safeguard the lives, property, and dignity of minority groups, there is concern that the situation may negatively affect the upcoming elections.
