Lucknow—An incident that occurred on March 26th at the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Women’s Hostel on Lucknow University’s new campus has sparked controversy. Neha Kamle, a third-year LLB student, had posted a photo of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar as her display picture (DP) in the hostel’s WhatsApp group. Subsequently, some other female students allegedly entered her room, assaulted her, and hurled casteist slurs at her.
According to a Times of India report, the victim, Neha Kamle, stated that she was the administrator of the WhatsApp group. Following the incident, she sent a complaint letter to the Provost, Dean of Students’ Welfare, and the University Proctor. The Provost and Dean of Students’ Welfare met with her, but initially received no assistance.
The university administration took cognizance. An inquiry committee, constituted by the proctor, began investigating the matter on April 2 and recorded statements from the victim and the accused students.
The Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students’ Association (BAPSA) surrounded the university’s Vice Chancellor’s office and staged protests demanding action. Students’ anger grew after the video went viral on social media.
The investigation committee has completed recording statements, but there has been no official word yet on any disciplinary action against the accused students. The victim has written a letter to the Vice Chancellor demanding her safety and strict action against the perpetrators. The university administration has not yet issued an official press statement on this matter.
The matter is being discussed due to racial sensitivities. The Vice Chancellor and Proctor of Lucknow University are expected to take further action to ensure the safety of all female students in the hostel.
