Youth lands in jail over rape of minor girl

A Meherpur court sent a 19-year-old youth to jail on charge of raping a minor girl in the district’s Gangni upazila yesterday.
The arrestee is Jewel Hossain of Chougachha village, said M Morshed Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Gangni Police Station.
Quoting the victim’s family, police said the 12-year-old girl went to a pond near her home to watch people fishing on Sunday. Jewel lured her to a mango orchard by promising to give her fish and raped her there.
He also threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident.
At night, she began crying in pain. When family members asked her, she told them what had happened with her, said police.
The girl was undergoing treatment at a hospital.
OC Morshed Chowdhury said the victim’s father filed a case aganist Jewel with his police station. Acting on information, police arrested Jewel from his maternal grandfather’s house in the Garadob area early yesterday.
He was produced before the court later in the day, which sent him to jail, the OC added.
