Police have detained four suspects in connection with the theft of idols and other items from Radha Gobinda Temple at Shibram Rangatipara village of Kathalbari union in Kurigram Sadar upazila.
The theft took place between 1:00am and 4:00am today, said Kamal Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kurigram Sadar Police Station.
The detainees are Abdul Jalil, 23; Jewel Rana, 21; Apel Mia, 24; and Ashiqur Rahman, 22. All are residents of Shibram Dayar Char village in Kathalbari union, said the OC.
According to police, the thieves broke the lock on the temple’s iron gate and stole brass and bell-metal idols of Radha-Krishna and Gopal, along with a bell-metal water pot, a bell and a pair of small cymbals.
After receiving a complaint, police conducted overnight raids at different locations and detained the four suspects. However, the stolen items have yet to be recovered.
Dhiman Kumar Roy, a member of the temple management committee, said police promptly visited the site and launched an investigation.
“We heard noises coming from the temple and rushed there. But before we could reach the scene, the thieves had fled with the idols and other valuables,” he said.
The OC said the detainees were being questioned, and efforts were underway to recover the stolen items.
