New Delhi: The cycle of violence and unrest in Manipur shows no signs of abating. On Tuesday, armed criminals brutally murdered a Kuki farmer in Lanson village, Tamenglong district. According to police, the deadly attack occurred around 11:30 a.m. in this Kuki-dominated area.
At the time of the incident, some farmers were carrying out their daily chores in a paddy field along the Imphal-Tamenglong road. Suddenly, armed assailants arrived and opened fire indiscriminately. A 55-year-old farmer, Haogin Louwum, was killed in the fierce gunfight. Police have registered a case and are conducting an intensive investigation to find the attackers.
This tragic incident comes on the same day that 14 Kukis, held hostage by Naga groups, were released. All 14 were abducted on May 13th following a twin attack in Kangpokpi and Noney districts. Four people, including three church leaders and a Naga man, were killed in that violence.
Just a day earlier, on Monday, another murder occurred in the state. Chunjanglung Panmei, a 58-year-old Rongmei Naga man, was murdered in Pongringlong Part-I village, Kangpokpi district. Panmei, along with eight other villagers, had gone to collect firewood in the Kangpokpi forest when they were attacked.
The latest killing has heightened tension in the area. The Kuki Inpi Sadar Hills, the main organization of the Kuki community, has directly blamed the Kamsan faction of the NSCN-IM for the murder of Haogin Louwum. The administration is currently trying to control the situation and investigate the matter.
