A Chattogram court yesterday sentenced a man to life imprisonment in a case filed over the rape of a four-year-old girl in the port city’s Bakalia area.
Judge Sayeda Hafsa Jhuma of the Metropolitan Child Violence Suppression Tribunal delivered the verdict within eight working days of the trial, after police submitted the charge sheet on June 4.
The convict is Monir Hossen, 30. The court later sent him to jail.
“The court delivered the verdict within eight working days… It recorded depositions of 18 witnesses in three working days. On June 16, the court heard arguments from both defence and prosecution and set June 17 for delivering the verdict,” he said.
On May 21, Nur Hossen Chairmanghata area of Bakalia turned into a battlefield after locals tried to snatch Monir Hossen, 30, a staffer of a local decoration shop in Bakalia, from police custody following the rape of the child.
Monir allegedly raped the four-year-old girl after taking her inside a decoration shop near her house that afternoon. Later, the child narrated the incident to her parents.
Following the incident, the child’s family held Monir and took him to their house. As the news spread in the locality, hundreds gathered in front of the house to beat the accused.
On information, police rushed to the spot. After around seven hours, police removed the accused from the area by firing blank shots and using sound grenades and tear gas canisters, triggering a clash in the area.
Agitated locals later torched a police truck and vandalised several traffic police boxes, leaving at least 20 police personnel injured.
