Muslim shrine vandalised, painted with saffron colour in Kanpur

New Delhi: A Muslim shrine was vandalised and painted with saffron colour in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur city on 17 January. The police have lodged a case against 40-50 people but no one has been arrested over the incident so far.
The Qazi of Kanpur city, Qari Abdul Quddos believes that individuals belonging to Hindu right-wing organisations were involved in the attack. Speaking to local reporters, he said, ”For the last three days, the miscreants belonging to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal were causing mischief. Complaints were lodged with the Bithoor police station. But no action was taken. Had the police acted upon, the mosque would have been saved.”
They also vandalized the structure and wrote ‘Jai Shri Ram’ on its wall, he told local reporters.
Qari Abdul Quddos said when he came to know about this he informed the DIG. The police came into action only after this. But by the time they reached the spot it was too late, he said.
Three days have passed, no arrest has been made. Singh, the SHO, told Clarion India that they are yet to identify the accused.
The incident happened at Ramdham Chouraha of the Bithoor area in Kanpur on January 17. The mosque is reported to have been painted with saffron colour. But the SHO of Bithoor police station, Kushalendra Pratap Singh, while talking to Clarion India on the phone on Wednesday, denied this. He said only the outer wall of the grave has been painted with saffron.
“Nothing happened to the mosque. Even the mazaar is intact,” he said.
According to him, only the outer wall of the mazaar has been painted with saffron colour.
But other sources contradict the SHO.
News18 Urdu reported that the mosque has been painted with saffron colour.
