Stop misuse of word ‘jihad’: NGO to Gujarat governor

New Delhi: The Minority Coordination Committee on Monday sent a memorandum to Gujarat governor Acharya Devvrat urging him to stop ”misuse’ of the word ‘jihad’. The NGO sought action against people and political representatives who are misusing the word ‘jihad’ to vilify the Muslim community and spread hatred among different communities.
The NGO’s convener Mujahid Nafees, while speaking to Muslim Mirror, raised strong concern against Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani’s speech at Vadodara on Sunday, in which he stated that the government would bring a law to disallow all activities that are going on in the name of ”love jihad”.
”As a chief minister of the state, he could have consulted any madrassa to find out the meaning of jihad and he would have known what importance ‘struggle’ has in Islam. It cannot be used for evil objectives,” the representation reads.
The representation maintained that the deliberate use of the word ‘jihad’ by Rupani has hurt the sentiments of the Muslims and it was a violation of the constitutional provisions as well.
Nafees stated that the word ”jihad” is being misused by several other politicians, who are holding constitutional positions and whose core job is to save the spirits of the constitution.
It stated that the ongoing controversy over ”love jihad” is aimed at influencing the upcoming civic elections in Gujarat.
