Incarcerated Trio: Delhi Court Directs Their Immediate Release from Tihar Jail

Tanha, Narwal and Kalita were not sure of their release even after getting bail from Delhi High Court

NEW DELHI – Finally, suspense over the release from jail of anti-CAA activists Natasha Narwal, Devangana Kalita and Asif Iqbal Tanha was over with a Delhi court on Thursday passing the release orders for them.
The trio was granted bail by the Delhi High Court on Tuesday but Delhi Police sought to delay their release on the pretext that they needed more time to verify their addresses.
Rejecting police’s argument, the Delhi Court on Thursday observed that it cannot be a plausible reason for keeping them behind bars. Accordingly, the court passed their release orders and directed their immediate release from the Tihar Jail.
Observing that it will be expedient in the interest of justice, the Court accordingly ordered thus: “The accused is directed to be released forthwith as per Orders of Delhi High Court. Since the verification of permanent address of accused shall require sometime, let the Report to this effect be filed by IO on or before 23.06.2021 at 2 30 PM with the concerned court.”
The release warrant should be immediately prepared and be sent to the Jail Superintendent via email.
Earlier, Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Bedi of Karkardooma Courts had deferred orders on their release after Delhi police sought time to verify the addresses of the accused and sureties.
All three students were arrested in May last year under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the case related to a large conspiracy in the northeast Delhi riots which broke out in February last year.
Communal clashes had broken out in northeast Delhi on February 24 last year after violence between citizenship law supporters and protesters spiraled out of control, leaving at least 53 people dead and around 200 injured.
