Dalit Man’s Death Sparks Outrage in Ahmedabad; Accused Arrested Amidst Allegations of Caste-Based Violence
Ahmedabad— In a shocking incident, a 40-year-old Dalit man from Ghuma was brutally beaten to death by three men over suspicion of theft in the early hours of Friday. The police have arrested the accused and launched an investigation into the case.
According to the Bopal police, the deceased, Indravadan Parmar, a resident of Vankarvaas in Ghuma village, was found severely injured when he was brought to the Bopal police station around 6 AM on Friday. Indravadan was later rushed to a community health centre (CHC) in Sanand, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The incident came to light after a complaint was filed by the victim’s elder brother, Bipin Parmar. He stated that Indravadan was passing by Vibhusha Bungalows when locals suspected him of theft and brutally assaulted him. Bipin, who was at a private hospital with his ailing father at the time, was informed about the attack by a friend. He rushed to CHC Sanand, only to find his brother’s body in the postmortem room.
Upon further inquiry, Bipin learned that three men—Ketan Patel of Neelkanth Housing Society in Ghuma, Kandarp Patel of Ganeshkunj Bungalows in Bopal, and Subhash Patel of Turquoise Blue in Shela—had lodged a theft complaint against Indravadan before the fatal attack.
Bipin alleged that his brother was targeted because of his caste. “We belong to a Scheduled Caste community, and my brother was murdered merely on suspicion of theft. We demand strict action against those responsible,” he stated in his complaint.
Inspector B.T. Gohil of Bopal police confirmed that the three accused had been arrested on charges of murder and abetment under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
According to police sources, Ketan Patel, who runs a fabrication business, had accused Indravadan of stealing metal pipes from his shop in recent days. On Thursday night, he, along with his associates—Kandarp Patel, who runs a tiffin service, and Subhash Patel, who owns a signboard printing business—set a trap to catch Indravadan in the act.
The trio allegedly caught Indravadan attempting to take a couple of metal pipes from the shop and proceeded to beat him mercilessly before handing him over to the Bopal police station. “When Parmar was brought to the station, he was in critical condition and soon collapsed. He was first taken to Ghuma CHC, which was closed, and then to Sanand CHC, where he was declared dead,” Inspector Gohil stated.
The case has sparked outrage, with activists and community leaders demanding a thorough investigation and stringent punishment for the accused. Authorities have assured that justice will be served in accordance with the law.
