A 70-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping a 7-year-old child in Belghar Uttar Union of Cumilla’s Lalmai upazila.
Police said the accused, Abad Ullah, allegedly raped the child repeatedly over a span of 10 days before she informed her mother about the incidents.
The incident came to light after a team of army and police raided an arbitration meeting of village elders who fined the accused Tk 50,000.
After hearing the victim’s statement, the joint forces arrested the accused and took him into custody.
According to police, the child, a second-grader at a local madrasa, was allegedly raped in an abandoned kitchen on February 27. The accused reportedly sexually assaulted her three more times over the next ten days.
The victim’s mother learned about the incidents on March 7 from neighbouring children. When she confronted her daughter, the child described the incidents in detail.
As the mother complained, local elders convened the arbitration meeting.
Fazlur Rahman, one of the elders who attended the meeting, said, “Local elders fined Abad Ullah Tk 50,000 for the child’s treatment in the meeting. However, the Armed Forces and police arrested him and took him to the police station.”
The arbitration meeting took place on the premises of the victim’s house.
Shah Alam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Lalmai Police Station, said the victim’s mother filed a rape case yesterday.
“The accused has been sent to jail through the court, and the victim has been sent to a medical college hospital for examination,” he said.
