3 arrested over attempted rape on bus in Gazipur

Police have arrested another accused on charges of attempting to rape a female passenger on an Ajmeri Paribahan bus in the Konabari Baimail signboard area of Gazipur on the Dhaka-Tangail highway.
The arrestee is Shakil Hossain, 27, a resident of an area under the jurisdiction of Kashimpur Police Station of Gazipur.
Earlier, two people — Shahed Ali, 19, and Kamrul Islam, 17 — were arrested from Chandra area of Kaliakoir on Friday afternoon and sent to jail by a court.
Shakil Hossain was arrested in a raid conducted in Konabari Kacha Bazar area on Saturday afternoon, Mohammad Papon Mia, inspector (investigation) of Konabari Police Station, confirmed The Daily Star around 10:00pm last night.
Police said around 7:00pm on Thursday, a woman boarded a bus of Ajmeri Paribahan from Uttara House Building bus stop to go home in Konabari.
At that time, driver Bachchu Mia was driving the Ajmeri Paribahan bus while another driver Shakil Hossain was sitting next to him.
The bus got into a traffic jam in the Hurricane area of Gazipur on the Dhaka-Tangail highway. During this time, several hours passed while stuck in the traffic jam.
Although the other passengers in the bus got off, the female passenger fell asleep on the bus.
At that time, the two drivers, two helpers and the female passenger were on the bus. Around 9:00pm, the bus was brought to the Baimile area and parked at a secluded place.
The drivers Bachchu Mia and Shakil tried to rape the female passenger, said police.
Later, bus driver Bachchu Mia dropped the passenger on the west side of Konabari Flyover and took the bus to Chandra area.
When the female passenger went home and informed her relatives about the matter, the relatives took her and filed a complaint with Konabari Police Station on Thursday night.
Konabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Nazrul Islam said operation is ongoing to arrest the absconding accused Bachchu.
The arrestee will be produced before a court today.
