55-year-old Dalit woman raped in Banda district, dies during treatment, accused arrested, investigation underway

Banda, Uttar Pradesh: A 55-year-old Dalit woman, who was allegedly raped by a neighbour on April 17 in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district, died during treatment at a government hospital late Saturday night.
According to police officials, the victim sustained serious injuries during the rape and was hospitalised since then.
The police arrested the accused the next day of the incident. The accused is a 28-year-old farm labourer and is currently in judicial custody.
“The victim had injury marks on her face. The body has been post-mortemed and will soon be handed over to the family for cremation. We are still waiting for the post-mortem report,” a police officer said.
The woman lived with her son and daughter-in-law. Police said the investigation into the case was ongoing and additional evidence was being collected.
