Tamil Nadu: Chaos during temple festival in Pudukottai, hut of Dalit family burnt, government bus attacked! 14 arrests

Violent clashes, arson and arrests between MBC and SC communities during Muthumariamman temple festival in Vadakadu village of Pudukkottai lead to tension in the village.

Tamil Nadu: Violent clashes broke out between youth from the Most Backward Class (MBC) and Scheduled Caste (SC) communities during the ongoing Muthumariamman temple festival at Vadakadu village near Alangudi in Pudukkottai district on Monday night (May 5).
According to the police, the dispute started with an argument between allegedly drunk youths at a petrol pump in the village. Later, the dispute broke out again in a residential area, leading to a fight between the two sides and several people were injured.
During the violence, a hut of a Dalit family and a two-wheeler were set on fire by unidentified persons. A video of this incident has gone viral on social media. Apart from this, the window of a government bus is also reported to be damaged.
Alangudi police have arrested 14 people from both the communities in connection with the violence. The injured are being treated at Alangudi Government Hospital.
Pudukottai Superintendent of Police Abhishek Gupta and Tamil Nadu Law Minister S. Regupati visited the spot on Monday night. After this the situation was brought under control. At present, police force has been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
In a press release issued on Tuesday (May 6), Pudukottai police said that the fight started with an altercation between drunk youths from both sides. Police also said that misleading information is being spread on social media regarding the incident. Strict action has been warned against this. Police is investigating the matter.
