Koppal (Karnataka) – A new case of caste discrimination has come to light in Muddaballi village of Koppal district, where all the barber shops in the village have been closed after people from the Dalit community demanded barber services. Muddaballi village is located just 7 kilometers away from the Koppal district headquarters.
According to local sources, similar complaints were raised about two months ago when the village barbers were refusing to provide hair cutting or shaving services to Dalit men. The barbers resumed providing services after police intervention and warning of action under the ‘untouchability’ law.
However, now there is news that barbers are deliberately keeping distance from Dalit customers and are going to the homes of people of other castes to provide personal service.
Due to this discrimination, Dalit men of Muddaballi have to go to Koppal city to get their hair cut or shaved.
Reacting to the matter, BJP Koppal district unit president Basavaraj Dadesaguru questioned the state government’s apathy. He said, “It is unfortunate that the government remains apathetic towards the discrimination being faced by Dalits. Strict action should be taken to ensure equality and justice.”
